Advanced Therapies Wales (ATW) welcomed the presentation of the first national report examining the availability, access and utilisation of advanced therapies in Wales at the Advanced Therapies Wales Symposium 2026.

The report, developed through the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee’s (NWJCC) Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) Outcomes Programme, provides valuable insights into how advanced therapies are being accessed and delivered across Wales and highlights the growing impact of these innovative treatments for patients.

Presented by Hannah Crocker, who leads the NWJCC ATMP Outcomes Programme, the report revealed a significant increase in access to advanced therapies since 2019, with patients from all seven health boards across Wales receiving treatment. The findings represent an important milestone in building a clearer understanding of the advanced therapy landscape in Wales and will help inform future commissioning, service planning and patient care.

The NWJCC commissions all NICE-recommended advanced therapies on behalf of people in Wales. Through the ATMP Outcomes Programme, data from across the health system is being brought together to better understand how these therapies are used and the difference they make for patients, families and services.

Alongside measuring treatment access and utilisation, the programme is developing a national dataset to track patient outcomes and gathering patient experience information to provide a richer understanding of the real-world impact of advanced therapies in Wales.

As Wales continues to strengthen its advanced therapies ecosystem, this evidence will play a vital role in supporting equitable access, identifying opportunities for service improvement and ensuring that future decisions are informed by robust Welsh data.

Hannah Crocker said:

“It was a great opportunity to share the progress we have made through the ATMP Outcomes Programme and learn from colleagues across the UK. By bringing together Welsh data, we can build a better understanding of how advanced therapies are being used, support future service planning, and help ensure patients continue to have equitable access to these innovative treatments.”

She added:

“One of the highlights of the symposium was hearing directly from patients who had received, or were preparing to receive, advanced therapies. Their experiences provided a powerful reminder of why this work matters and the positive impact these treatments can have on people’s lives.”

As a national partnership bringing together NHS organisations, universities, researchers and industry, Advanced Therapies Wales is committed to supporting the development, adoption and evaluation of advanced therapies across Wales.
